The Lowcountry Writers’ Retreat, where writers can choose to work on their own or with an on-site mentor, is located on a shady street, lined with palm trees and live oaks. Just a three minute walk to the ocean, one block away from quaint shopping and restaurants, it’s also only a twenty minute drive to historic, downtown Charleston, recently voted by Conde Nast as the Number One City/Travel destination in the U. S. The cottage complex was first built in 1940 when the original building hosted a small cafe where some of the late 40’s and 50’s musicians ate barbecue—Pat Boone, Ray Price, and even Elvis Presley, the King himself—to name a few. The two accommodations are truly charming and inspiring, offering all modern amenities, off-street parking, private entries and private garden areas.
The Writer’s Cottage is a unique, free-standing structure that features a cozy sitting area with built-in sofas and a desk where you can read, relax, and write. There’s a tiled bath with shower, a full kitchen with range, oven and fridge, coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave, pots, pans, dishes, and everything you need to inhabit your own little world while you focus on your writing. A spiral staircase leads to a sleeping loft with a queen size platform bed. Central heat and air conditioning. You’ll enjoy your own private garden, complete with lounging chairs and a hot and cold outdoor shower where you can shower with a mermaid- the perfect place for morning coffee or unwinding at the end of a long day. And something rare in a writer’s retreat: the cottage is pet-friendly with a small fee. One block to shops and cafes, a three minute walk to the ocean. Off-street parking.
The Writer’s Suite, annexed to the Host Cottage, offers as much privacy as the Writer’s Cottage. With central air conditioning and heat, a queen size bed, writing desk, private master bath, and french doors that open onto a private, enclosed deck beneath a grand, old magnolia tree, you’ll feel at home (and, hopefully, so will your muse). Mini fridge, coffee pot and microwave make it easy to arrange for simple meals and have your favorite drinks and snacks on hand. One block to shops and cafes, a three minute walk to the ocean. Off-street parking.
